Q: As a representative from a smaller institution, what perspective do you bring to the Board?
A: My first priority when I am working in a committee or working group is to try to reflect the diversity of perspectives and seek solutions that align the largest possible number of participants. That approach builds trust between members, which is an essential component for effective group dynamics. The challenge is even greater for a national organization such as CRKN with a diverse composition of member institutions. Everyone must find something to support, regardless of size, region or language. This has underscored my involvement in CRKN. I believe that my experience as a CREPUQ committee member, as part of the network at the Université du Québec, as well as my knowledge of the issues and challenges faced by institutions allows me to make a positive contribution as a member of the Board of Directors.

Clare Appavoo represented Canada at the SCOAP3 meeting in Geneva, on May 6, 2013 to provide an update on Canada’s reconciliation process and to participate in the discussions regarding moving forward. CRKN re-affirmed Canada’s commitment to the project with the proviso that the project must be cost neutral to CRKN members. Other countries whose National Contact Points were in attendance included; the US, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, the Scandinavian countries, the Netherlands, Hungary and Czech Republic. The reconciliation process continues as not all countries have completed their process. Ongoing support and enthusiasm for this global Open Access project was expressed by the countries represented at the meeting.

As the CSAG nears the end of its term and prepares a final report, members have been invited to participate in a series of teleconferences. The teleconferences will allow CSAG members to share their findings and recommendations, and allow the broader CRKN membership to provide input on the report before its presentation to the Board of Directors on June 20th. Four teleconferences – one for each Canadian region, will be held between May 15th and May 21st. Members are invited to read the draft report and supporting documents here (LIM login required).

CRKN is progressing through the engagement plan to solicit member and stakeholder input to the planning process. Consultations have taken place with Western members, Canadian library consortia, and the NRT. Once all the engagement sessions have taken place, input from participants will be integrated in the final draft and discussed at the June 20, 2013 Board meeting. Depending on the findings, the Board may request some additional investigations in advance of the AGM. Members will have an opportunity to discuss and review the final draft of the plan at an AGM workshop, before the plan is ratified at the meeting of the members. The engagement plan and a report outlining the achievements against objectives of the 2010-2012 strategic plan can be found on the website. Please take a look to see how you can get involved.

Based on the success of last year’s pilot initiative, the Board of Directors has approved the expansion of CRKN’s foreign exchange management project. CRKN will be offering all members additional certainty and risk mitigation for their USD commitments for the Elsevier Science Direct, Taylor & Francis and Springer licenses for the 2014 calendar year. Members will have until May 17, 2013 to opt-in to the project by completing and returning their commitment forms. Members who elect not to participate in the project will be invoiced as usual for these products.
